About Japan Travel Tools

Japan Travel Tools is a free website for visitors to Japan, operated by Hidamari Works. Our first tool is a map of public toilets across Japan.

Why this site

Finding a toilet is one of the small problems that can spoil a day of sightseeing, especially when you cannot read the signs. We wanted a map that opens instantly in a browser, covers the whole country, and tells you what you actually need to know: is it free, is it wheelchair accessible, is it open.

Where the data comes from

All toilet locations and details come from OpenStreetMap, a map made by volunteers. Once a month we download every public toilet in Japan (amenity=toilets), remove those marked as private, and keep the details useful for travellers. The current data is from 2026-09-28 and contains 32,028 toilets.

How we calculate the numbers

• All numbers on this site are calculated automatically from the current data each time the site is built. We do not type them in by hand.
• City figures count toilets by straight-line distance (1, 3 and 10 km) from each city's main station, not by city boundaries.
• Percentages are shares of all mapped toilets in the area. A feature counts only if it is tagged in OpenStreetMap; untagged does not mean unavailable.

Accuracy

OpenStreetMap is edited by volunteers and may be incomplete or out of date. Please check on site. You can improve the data for everyone by editing OpenStreetMap. See Data Sources & Licenses for details and our disclaimer.
